Structural Bioinformatics, Inc. Recruits David Muth As President and Chief Operating Officer

San Diego, CA, November 15, 2001 -- Structural Bioinformatics, Inc. (SBI) Chairman and CEO Edward T. Maggio, Ph.D., announced today that David D. Muth has joined the company as President and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Muth’s responsibilities will include oversight of company operations including sales, marketing and database production, as well as drug research and development at SBI and its European subsidiary, SBI-Advanced Technologies, A/S.

“David’s appointment marks a major milestone in the growth of our company,” said Dr. Maggio. “He brings a broad skill set, which encompasses hands on experience in all commercial functions with an outstanding track record of delivering results. His expertise will be particularly important for SBI as we expand and grow both our proteomics-driven drug discovery activities and our pharmaceutically focused structural database products business.”

Mr. Muth commented, “I am delighted to be joining the SBI team at this very exciting time in the company’s history. SBI’s proprietary technology greatly accelerates the drug discovery process, and that translates into real value for pharmaceutical and biotech partners.”

For the five years prior to joining SBI, Mr. Muth was Senior Vice President of Business Operations for the $240-million biopharmaceutical company, NABI, Inc., where he had developed and implemented the strategy that transitioned NABI from a plasma supplier into a fully integrated biopharmaceutical company. During this time, he grew the company’s pharmaceutical sales by 40% annually. Additionally, he was responsible for two product acquisitions and four product launches.

Prior to this, Mr. Muth had a distinguished seventeen-year career with Johnson & Johnson in a variety of senior management roles. He held positions of increasing responsibility spanning all commercial functions including marketing research, sales, product management, new product development, and corporate development. In this capacity, he was responsible for the successful launch of three multi-hundred million dollar pharmaceutical products, namely Terazol (anti-fungal), Ortho Cyclen, and Ortho Tri-Cyclen (oral contraceptives). Additionally, he directed worldwide female healthcare business development activities for Ortho McNeil, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Mr. Muth holds a Masters of Business Administration degree in finance and a second M.B.A. in pharmaceutical marketing.
